DO YOU KNOW THE SYMPTOMS OF DIABETES?

Do you know if you have diabetes? If not, do you know the symptoms of diabetes? If you were a diabetic and didn't know it, would your current lifestyle be healthy for a person with diabetes? With over 5 million Americans unaware that they have diabetes, certain lifestyle changes could save your life. Being unaware that you have diabetes could lead to serous health problems and even death. A diabetic must always be aware of what they eat and how much they exercise. In order to get this message to the urban communities of Miami we are having a "The Be Advised and Know the Signs Health Fair".

"The Be Advised and Know the Signs Health Fair" will show the urban communities of Miami, the warning signs of diabetes, healthy eating, and good exercising tips. The goal of this event is to educate the urban communities about healthy living in an educational and enjoyable environment. There will be plenty of live music, food, games and prizes for the entire family.

Here some warning signs of diabetes:

1. Frequent urination and an unquenchable thirst.

2. Blurred vision.

3. Numbness or tingling in arms, legs or feet.

4. Extreme irritability and fatigue.

5. Unusual weight loss.

My question to you, is if you were unaware you had diabetes would your current lifestyle be a healthy one for a diabetic?

  1. In the last 6 months I have adopted excercising into my lifestyle. I've found that it calms me and keeps me healthy. so I think that would be good if I was a diabetic, but my eating habits are a little off. I cut fast foods from my diet almost completely out of my diet but I love sweets, and every once in a while I indulge. I also eat alot of starches. I have sut down portion sizes but, if i was a diabetic, I would have to alter my eating habits. But otherwise I think I would be on the right track if I was a diabetic.

  4. I learned some new things about diabetes that I did not know. To know the signs is the first step to prevention. Educating the public will be the key to reducing the number of people effected by this disease.

  5. I think that most of my lifestyle choices are safe decisions for diabetics. I eat a lot of healthy food, like salads and a lot of vegetables. I LOVE VEGETABLES! I know... its kinda weird.

I exercise on a daily basis and I have yet to see any of these warning signs. I think these signs are interesting to know about because I wasn't aware that diabetes has symptoms that are so common. Diabetes runs in my family so knowing the early signs will help me in the long run to figure out how to catch the disease before it gets to serious.

  6. yes i know the symptoms of diabetes, but most of the time I don't think people want to admit they have it. I know that the black community leads in deaths with diabetes, but 2still continue to eat unhealthy foods and refuse to exercise. I was talking to my friends about starting a workout plan in the afternoons when we get off work, but they all laughed at me and they didn't need to excercise, becaue they were still young. I think you should emphasize the importance of starting early, when it comes to liviving a healhty life style and not just start when your body gives out on you.

  10. OPPS.. I missed and erased my comment...but like i was saying. I use portion control..so there really isn't any need to change my plan when it comes to healhty eating. I think people should adopt to this method of eating because you can eat what you want and still have control in your health. remember everything in moderation!

  11. Ashley,
I think you made some very valid points when it comes to knowing the symptoms of diabetes. If I didn't know I had diabetes, my current lifestyle would not be a good one for a diabetic;reason being is I don't think I get enough rest at night, especially during the past five weeks:) and I eat late at night. Although I am trying to live a healthy lifestyle I have many obstacles in the way, living healthy isn't cheap. I find it easier to pick up some Ramen Noodles, chips, and frozen pizza from the grocery store, rather than taking time out to find nutritious substitutes.
Maybe with time I will learn to seek out more healthy foods and take time out to start a work out plan.Wish me luck!
